Mexico's economy grows 1.6% in the first quarter

Economic growth was driven by a quarterly advance in secondary and tertiary activities of 1.1%, according to the timely estimate of GDP prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

At an annual rate, growth in both economic sectors was 2.8% and 0.6%, respectively.

On the other hand, primary activities showed a decline of 1.9% compared to the last quarter of 2021. Although they maintain a growth of 2.1% compared to the January-March period of last year.

Last year, the Mexican economy had an annual growth of 4.8%, insufficient to cover the 8.5% drop caused by the confinement of the COVID-19 health emergency.

The Ministry of Finance forecasts a growth of 3.4% for 2022. An optimistic forecast compared to the estimate of the International Monetary Fund, an organization that expects Mexico to expand 2% throughout the year.

The final GDP figures for the first quarter could change, when the official data is published, on May 25, 2022.
