A day to celebrate?

A day to celebrate?

The first day of the fifth month of the year is always a date of celebration for people who daily earn their daily bread. On May 1, International Worker’s Day is remembered, where the claim of labor and social rights are flag.

To know the history of this remembrance, we must make history and go back to the end of the 19th century in the year 1886, when union movements began to appear in the United States and to generate wheal among employers.

At that time, all workers worked up to 18 hours a day without rest in industrial factories, however, in the face of this violation of health and human rights, the American Federation of Labor, the strongest union at the time, decided that as of May 1 the maximum working day would be eight hours and threatened the employers with a series of strikes and protests if the employers did not comply with the law.

WORK, LEISURE AND REST

“Eight hours of work, eight hours of leisure and eight hours of rest” was the slogan that was heard shouted in all the alleys. Multiple workers had to go on stoppages and strikes, because many companies did not comply with the mandatory eight-hour day.

Since then, the United States experienced four hard days of protests and police fights, with the city of Chicago being the epicenter of the workers’ demonstrations. Albert Pearsons was one of the people who were at the forefront of the entire revolution.

The death of a police officer would stain with blood all the struggle that the workers had been carrying out to assert their rights. Until in 1889, three years after the unfortunate events, the Socialist Workers’ Congress of the Second International declared May 1 as International Workers’ Day to honor the struggle for the eight-hour day in the rest of the countries. and, at the same time, remember ‘the Chicago martyrs’.

LOCAL PLAN

Paraguay continues to have significant numbers on the matter. According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) together with those provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), our country has the least affected unemployment rate in the region, with an increase of only 1.3% at the end of 2020 , encouraging data showing that more and more Paraguayans have access to decent and well-paid employment.

From the Government they point out that the social programs and assistance contributed to the reduction of the incidence of the pandemic on the indices.

On the employer side, it was observed that a total of 6,618 new companies were registered in 2021 in the Directorate of Employer Worker Registry (REOP) of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security (MTESS). They employ a total of 19,407 employees.

Among those registered are large companies, micro, medium and small companies carried out the procedure online.

HOLIDAY

Within the framework of Labor Day, the President of the Republic, María Abdo Benítez, announced that the holiday that should have been this Sunday will go to Monday, May 2, in order to grant workers a day of rest.

In addition, he encouraged citizens to take advantage of these long weekend days to reactivate domestic tourism and help this sector that is gradually recovering.
