An microscopic study made to 50 cell phones in the city of Bogotá, revealed the existence of “aerobic mesophilic microorganisms”, which are commonly found everywhere, need oxygen and live at an average temperature between 20 and 60°C.

Andrea Cortés, a microbiologist at the Manuela Beltrán University, assured that it is essential to clean these devices daily, to prevent this type of disease from occurring.
“The use we make of our cell phones makes them carry a significant number of microorganisms on their surface, most of them belong to the group of “aerobic mesophiles”, these do not represent a greater risk to people’s healthsince they are permanently in any place,” he said.
Nevertheless, The expert pointed out that some pathogenic microorganisms could cause serious infections at the level of the ear, skin and even gastrointestinal, due to the proximity of the device to the mouth.
“An important issue regarding the tampering with cell phones is when we take it with us to the bathroom. Bathrooms have a different microbiological load due to all the activities carried out in them and there is a group of microorganisms called ‘coliforms’ that are usually in the intestines of warm-blooded animalsincluding humans,” he said.

He added that “they could reach the surface of our phones due to bad hygiene habits and being on the surface of the phones when we bring them close to our facewe may be entering our body through the ear or the mouth.”
He explained that To clean a cell phone, the main thing is to follow the general instructions of the manufacturer, in addition to removing the protective linings.
“That is why it is very important that regardless of the type of microorganisms that are in our devices, we can do proper maintenance and cleaning”, he pointed.
He added that it is necessary to clean the dirt with a dry cloth and then moisten another cloth with isopropanol solution, without exceeding humidity so as not to damage the equipment.
Finally, The expert pointed out that using the cell phone in the bathroom, as well as using it with unwashed hands after going to the bathroom, increases the risk of the presence of “enterobacteria” and that these reach the surface of the devices.
