President Lacalle Pou attended the XIV Latin American Congress of Business Leaders

The International Christian Union of Business Executives (Uniapac) held, this Thursday 28, a Latin American meeting in whose opening the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, participated. The event, called “The responsibility of the entrepreneur in the current reality of Latin America”, was also attended by the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado, and the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Pablo Mieres.

The activity was organized by the Christian Association of Business Leaders (ACDE) and is structured over two days. During the event, a message sent by Pope Francis was read and the main figures of Uniapac and ACDE were interviewed: Bruno Bobone, president of Uniapac International; Gigi Cavalieri, head of Uniapac Latin America, and Rosario González Stewart, president of ACDE Uruguay.

Likewise, a series of dissertations were held on different issues related to labor matters, such as institutions, decent work, and the humane and sustainable economy. In this context, Minister Pablo Mieres addressed the issue of institutional strength as a key to the development of countries. In addition, he considered that it is necessary to balance the role of the lobby group (lobby) in the relationship between politics and business, in terms of their ability to propose.

The Secretary of State warned about the threat that clientelism represents for the link between the businessman and the ruler and described it as “a diversion” that does not allow consolidating the strengthening of the institutional framework and respect for the rules of a democratic society. In his opinion, the particularistic interest is “a very frequent temptation” that leaves aside the general interest and the common good.

The International Christian Union of Executives —an international ecumenical organization— was founded in 1931 by the Dutch, Belgian and French Catholic employers’ federations, with the participation of observers from Italy, Germany and Czechoslovakia. Its main objectives are oriented towards the creation of a fairer and more humane society, through the promotion of the transformation of companies. Currently, Uniapac brings together Christian associations of business leaders in 40 countries around the world. Presidency
