This will be today's partial solar eclipse

Today Saturday you can see a partial eclipse Sun. The phenomenon will be visible throughout the territory from 4:30 p.m., reaching its peak at 5:30 p.m., to end after 6:00 p.m.

Although it can be observed from all over the country, in the northern cities the visibility will be lower. In Arica, for example, the sun will be covered by only 4%, while in Punta Arenas the coverage will be 50%. In the central area, the Sun will be covered by approximately 30%.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth. “That creates a shadow that blocks the sunlight, partially or totally. When it is partial, as in the case of the eclipse on April 30, the Sun and the Moon are not perfectly aligned, so the Moon does not completely cover the Sun.

Caution when observing

Do not forget that to see the eclipse, even if it is partial, you must wear sunglasses with a safety filter. This is essential, the specialists point out, since looking directly can damage the retina. “Remember that dark glasses are not safe to look directly at the sun,” NASA warns.

Visibility schedules in the national territory

Arica: peak at 5:59 p.m. (4% covered sun).

Antofagasta: peak at 5:52 p.m. (12% covered sun).

Santiago: peak at 5:37 p.m. (29% covered sun).

Montt port: peak at 5:21 p.m. (41% covered sun).

Punta Arenas: peak at 5:59 p.m. (51% covered sun).
