The vice president of Nicaragua and spokeswoman for the government of Daniel Ortega, Rosario Murillo, announced this Tuesday that the building that housed the representation of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Managua will pass into the hands of the State.
“The Attorney General’s Office reports that the real estate that was occupied by the office of the deplorable OAS, despicable OAS, has been declared of public utility and will pass to the State of Nicaragua,” said the vice president in the official media.
The government resumed an attack against the OAS since Sunday, announcing that it would withdraw the diplomatic credentials of its representatives in the forum that it called “an instrument of the United States,” while it was announced that would close the agency’s headquarters in Managua.
According to the official spokesperson, “the museum of infamy” will be developed in the building occupied by the OAS, through the Institute of Culture, once the order is made official in the official newspaper, The Gazette.
“What more infamy than that ministry of colonies,” added the vice president about the building.
The announcement comes in the middle of a letter that was released from the OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro, addressed to the president of the organization’s Permanent Council, Elizabeth Darius-Clarke, in which he classifies as “despicable in legal and ethical terms.” Managua’s action to close the organization’s headquarters.
“This had never happened, not even in the times of the worst dictatorships in the region, including those that Nicaragua had experienced,” Almagro said in the letter.
Nicaragua’s relations with the OAS have hardened since November 2021, when it issued a declaration in which it said that the presidential elections at that time, where Ortega prevailed for a new term, “They were neither fair nor transparent.”
The government requested his departure from the OAS days later, stating that “it was an interventionist instrument.”
“We are resigning and disassociating ourselves from the OAS, terminating the link between the Nicaraguan State and the OAS, we are disassociating ourselves from the OAS,” Foreign Minister Denis Moncada said at the time.
It is not the first building taken
Managua’s attack against a headquarters is not the first. In December, the government of Daniel Ortega handed over what was the diplomatic headquarters of Taiwan in Managua to the People’s Republic China, your new ally.
Taipei reacted almost immediately to the delivery and called it an “illegal occupation”, according to a statement issued by the island’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
