Holidays against the lack of public policies

Holidays against the lack of public policies

As one of the measures implemented by the National Government, the nation’s chief executive, Mario A. Benítez, decided to move the “Worker’s Day” holiday to May 2 “in order to continue reactivating our economy.” However, the situation of poverty in which the country continues to find itself, not to mention the weak labor situation, take precedence over the intended reactivation.

The Mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) concluded in a report that by 2022 our country expects lower growth in the economy, higher inflation than projected and even fiscal risks.

On the other hand, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), after the unprecedented crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the informality situation for the country’s labor sector has grown, with more than 22 thousand people inserted in that area. In the third and fourth quarters of last year some 42 thousand workers entered.

Not to mention that Law 1723, which authorizes the Executive to transfer holidays to Monday, states in Art 3: the decree that establishes the annual calendar of holidays must be set six months in advance of the year for which it should apply.

POPULIST MEASURE
For the communicator, political scientist and teacher, Clara Martínez, the measure adopted by the President is insufficient because in reality the implementation of public policies is needed to truly reactivate the economy with the aim of generating a positive impact on the entire population.

“Right now we are experiencing a real economic crisis and there is greater social inequality. We are at a time when we should work harder on economic reactivation and the National Government is not carrying out serious projects to generate changes,” said the specialist.

Likewise, the professional spoke of another problem that largely affects the country’s institutions and economy: corruption. In that sense, she highlighted the importance of putting in place plans and tools that can help in the fight against the aforementioned shortcoming, because without that, true progress cannot be projected, according to Martínez.

“Apart from being populist, Marito’s decision is actually a measure that benefits only one party, such as the tourism sector. However, not all of us will be able to carry out tourist activities because the enormous needs are the reality of many families in the country,” the political scientist pointed out.

Regarding the work that must be carried out in the government, the communicator spoke of the importance of applying inter-institutional tasks, involving each of the country’s sectors, also improving the international image, thus generating a country brand.

Within the point, for the professional, international positioning will represent a kick to predict little by little better results in economic and financial terms, since that will generate a more respectable profile for our country, taking into account the generation of bad external references.

On the other hand, impunity will continue to be a major obstacle to economic recovery. Regarding the resolution of problems, Martínez stressed that citizens should not put aside their role as comptroller.

“We are in an election year and there are many promises, there are dirty campaigns, the economic side is neglected and families want concrete answers because they do not have any position on the part of the State”, declared the specialist.

Faced with this, the political scientist highlighted that even the poverty rates remained at 40%, also mentioning that taking these data into account, fantasies, hopes and proposals that are not even studied continue to be sold.

“I would like our politicians to be able to carry out efficient management, prioritizing the interests of the people first, to see concrete results, benefiting the majority of Paraguayans,” the specialist stressed.
