Despite this, the fuel sold in cities like Quito continues to be more polluting than Guayaquil or Cuenca.
This November 16, 2021, the Minister of Energy announced that Petroecuador is producing a diesel less polluting premium. According to an official statement, the fuel which is marketed in the northern part of the country and which is processed in the Esmeraldas Refinery, currently has a concentration of 86 parts per million of sulfur content.
In 2020, that same diesel it had a sulfur concentration of 95 parts per million. In the south of the country, fuel that is sold has an even lower content, which reaches up to 35 parts per million, according to the official version.
