Some 149 rural women and 97 men learned to read and write during the first quarter of 2022.
According to a report from the Department of Literacy of the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES), a total of 246 people were taught to read and the majority are from the Ngäbe Buglé region, where 66 people were taught to read.
The province of Chiriquí ranks second with 64 and Panamá Oeste with 54 beneficiaries.
The report also reveals that since 2019, 2,955 people across the country have been taught to read and write, and since the program began in 2007, some 79,071 people have benefited.
Currently MIDES, with the support of 120 volunteers, has 148 environments in operation, where 508 people are learning to read brochures, books and newspapers, a skill that until now was unknown to them. Most of these environments are still maintained in the Ngäbe Buglé region, in districts of Plan Colmena such as Chica, Cerro Banco and Boca de Balsa.
