MADRID, Spain.- Dr. Alexander Jesús Figueredo, harassed by the regime in recent times, managed to leave Cuba on Tuesday.
The news was announced by Figueredo himself who, through his social networks and from the plane, shared a photo with his passport in hand. Later he published a video of the plane’s takeoff.
“I will return the day you are free, where thinking differently is not a crime. Where for wanting life they don’t pay you with death. Where they measure you by your intellect, not by your ideology. Only then will I return”, wrote the doctor in his profile of Facebook.
He also shared a fragment of the poem “Goodbye to the Homeland” by the Venezuelan journalist and writer Rafael María Baralt: “My luck does not hurt you, / Do not curse my name, do not forget me / That, still close to death, / I will ask with a voice strong / Victory to God for your just struggles / Blessed am I if one day / Heaven makes me compassionate to you, / I give it to me, my homeland / A worthy sepulcher in your sacred soil”.
Dr. Alexander Pupo Casas declared to CyberCuba that Alexander Jesús Figueredo managed to leave the island “after days of insomnia and efforts in several countries.”
Although he did not specify the country of destination and the way out, “for security reasons” and “so as not to expose those who helped”, he did clarify that he is not in Nicaragua.
On April 17, the Free Cuban Medical Guild reported that the Nicaraguan Government had denied entry to its territory to Alexander Jesús Figueredo.
“Nicaragua has just denied entry to Dr. Alexander Jesús Figueredo. Alexander lost his job in Cuba because of his outspoken stance against the Cuban government and has been systematically harassed. That’s right, they just denied Dr. Figueredo Izaguirre entry to Nicaragua and he couldn’t fly today, ”the organization specified.
“We have to look for alternatives so that he is really released since in Cuba he only has prison left,” he claimed from Facebook.
Figueredo Izaguirre, a specialist in Comprehensive General Medicine and a resident of Urology, was disqualified last November from practicing his profession in Cuba, for continuing to denounce the violation of Human Rights by the regime and the problems of the Cuban health system.
