Cuba: the economy always in the background

Cuba, Alejandro Gil Fernández, Mipymes

HAVANA, Cuba.- The Economic System is the way in which the economic activity of a society is organized to manage and administer the resources available. It follows that the objective of any Economic System in the world is the production of goods and services to satisfy the needs of the individuals that comprise it. With this definition it can be said that there is no Economic System in Cuba, because the economy —which is less important than politics— is like a cachumbambé, but instead of swinging up and down, it swings to one side and to the other. other: we are never up.

Recently, the Government of Havana reported on new measures for marketing in the Caribe and CIMEX chain stores, to be implemented as of April 21, which turned out to be old decisions whose main objective is undoubtedly political and not economic-social. . They are trying to avoid crowds of people in stores, which can lead to protests, because it is in those places where the queues are endless that the atmosphere begins to “heat up” and those present usually express it with shouts, especially against the “appointed” president.

The measure -already used- consists of being able to buy only in the municipality of residence, what they call “municipalization”, and the supply book will serve as controller of all the products that the family nuclei acquire, always starting from the scanning of the card of identity, taking as a possibility the linking of the notebooks to the stores and points of sale, organizing everything by sales cycles and controlled products, which implies that each nucleus will have its possible day of purchase assigned. If you are lucky and they stocked up that day, then you can buy “something”.

The three most conflictive shopping centers in the capital: “Cuatro Caminos”, “Carlos III” and “El Pedregal” will have more than one municipality assigned to them.

Now, as if it were something “novel” and very “relevant”, the Ministry of Internal Trade announced that it would guarantee the distribution of coffee during the month of April, but what it did not say was what they were linking it with, since the stage of coffee with peas was left behind. However, they explained that the coffee would be sold in unlithographed containers due to delays in importing the usual packaging.

They also took for granted that there would be powdered milk in April for children up to seven years old, chronic childhood diets and pregnant women. Soy yogurt destined for children between the ages of seven and 13 will be replaced by a milkshake mix in 10 provinces, and delivery is guaranteed in the remaining six.

For its part, the regulated sale of eggs corresponding to the month of April will be postponed until May 7 in all provinces, it is almost to say that it was increased by one week per month.

The most important thing is that none of this for the government has to do with the inefficiency of the functioning of the economy in the country. Right now the fault lies with: “the context of the international economic crisis, which also impacts Cuba.”

This is a small sample of the instability that Cubans go through all month, every month. There is no guarantee that the little they sell through the misnamed supply book is available to the people. In recent months they have reduced quotas, changed items, stopped supplying age groups. Anything can happen in this “economy”.

Most Cubans spend the end of the month without rice, which is the main dish right now on the Cuban table, because it pairs with anything. Rather it can be said that the average Cuban makes him flirt.

There are missing products. Now they have announced the purchase of chicken, beef and pork from Mexico. It is incredible to think that having companies throughout the country dedicated to this type of production there is no meat of any kind; They always say that due to lack of resources because of the embargo.

However, many of us are sure that it would be the same. But you always have to look for someone to blame, it is part of the continuity of the dictatorship.

It is time to start asking those who still “believe” in the regime: why doesn’t capitalism use a supply book? The answer that the “Revolution” gave to this was based on equality for all in society; but right now they can’t have that empty argument.

They are not going to say that the hierarchs of the dictatorship and their relatives in the 15 provinces of the country and the Isla de la Juventud Special Municipality eat the same as the people and stock up on the book. Anyone who sees his bellies knows that they are not rice and beans.
