Unamos remembers Hugo Torres on what would be his 74th birthday

The Renovating Democratic Union (Unamos) launched a new campaign to denounce the crimes and repressive acts of the Nicaraguan regime after four years of civic struggle in the country. The opposition body highlights the situation to which the members of its organization have been subjected and mainly the death of the political prisoner Hugo Torres.

This April 25, the retired general and political prisoner would be 74 years old. «Dear Hugo, on your birthday we miss your bright life that was always close in the most difficult moments. Our fight for a Nicaragua in freedom, which claimed your life, is still alive », declared Unamos through his campaign under the hashtag« #AbrilVive, # 4AñossinJusticia ».

On June 13, 2021, “commander one”, as Hugo Torres was recognized, was kidnapped by police officers. He was later accused of alleged “conspiracy against the homeland”, he was held for 244 days in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, known as “El Nuevo Chipote”, in Managua.

On Saturday, February 12, the death of the vice president of Unamos was learned at the Roberto Huembes Hospital, owned by the Ortega Police, after being secretly admitted due to health problems.

General Hugo Torres was a Sandinista guerrilla and in 1974 participated in an armed operation known as the takeover of the house of José María “Chema” Castillo, a high-level official of the Somocista dictatorship. With this action, Torres sought to negotiate the release of 14 political prisoners of the once powerful dynastic dictatorship, including Daniel Ortega, the same one who became his executioner until his death.

In turn, they denounced the situation in which the former Sandinista guerrilla Dora María Téllez finds herself, current political prisoner of Ortega sentenced to eight years in prison for the alleged crime of “conspiracy to undermine national integrity”, under Law 1055 , known as Law of sovereignty.
