The independent deputy, Gabriel Silva and proponent of the bill that will legalize the use of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in Panama, and which was approved in the first debate by the plenary session of the National Assembly in recent days, clarified this Monday on Radio Panama, that This regulation is not the same as the one that exists in El Salvador, which is defined as mandatory use, and in our country it will be optional.

“Here in Panama we are making this optional, that means that if I have a cryptocurrency in Panama and I want to pay with it and the place does not want to accept it, the place is not obliged to accept it. In addition, the legislation of El Salvador speaks only of a cryptocurrency that is Bitcoin, however, the project approved in the first debate establishes the possibility of using any cryptocurrency, however we cannot and do not want to close to the use of only one cryptocurrency”, he explained.

He added that there is also a constitutional aspect. “Our constitution prohibits the compulsory use of only one currency and in Panama you can use different currencies, establishing a single one would be unconstitutional. We were not only talking about Bitcoin, we were talking about a plurality of cryptocurrencies,” he said.
