One dead and three arrested after brutal fight between fans at a match in Colombia

Hoy Paraguay

The wounded and arrested belong to the two coastal teams. The fans involved in the brawl ripped chairs from the stands to throw them, along with stones, at the other team, according to authorities.

The fights began after the 72nd minute of the match between people located in the north and east stands, who had previously threatened to start the disturbances.

The situation got out of control and the fans entered the field of play and interrupted the match that the two teams tied 1-1 and that was never resumed.

The organizers asked over the loudspeaker that the chairs not be pulled out, while the police in the field tried to put the situation in order.

One of the injured fans, a Unión Magdalena fan identified as Brandon Gustavo Somosa, died in a clinic in the city of Santa Marta where he was transferred after receiving several stab wounds during the riots, according to local police.

“How sad that they cannot enjoy soccer in peace (sic)”, said the mayor of Santa Marta (where the game was played), Virna Johnson, who reported on her Twitter account of the three detainees and that they were going to give a reward of five million pesos (1,300 dollars) to whoever gives information about those responsible.

“I will be waiting for the investigations to give results and those responsible to pay,” said the mayor of Samaria, who ordered a deployment of the Police and the Army last night to control the excesses.

It is not the first time that situations of this nature have been experienced in Colombian football, since last February fans of the Unión Magdalena also invaded the field in a match with Atlético Bucaramanga, after which the samarios received an economic sanction and the Disciplinary Committee decided to settle the match with a 0-3 in favor of the Santanderean club.

The grandstand of this team was also sanctioned with six dates without assistance for their behavior, although the sanctions can now be greater due to the magnitude of the fights.
