Bustillo before the gesture of the Turkish Foreign Minister: "We reject any invocation that generates violence"

cromo

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Bustillo, questioned “any behavior, invocation or offensive gesture that generates physical or moral violence” this Sunday during the act of commemoration of the 107 years of the Armenian genocide.

His statements come after Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, made a racist gesture towards a group of protesters from the Armenian community after the inauguration of his embassy in Montevideo this Saturday.

As President Luis Lacalle Pou did this afternoon, the Foreign Minister condemned this class of actions. “We are a country of welcome and harmony, which prefers conciliation to confrontation, which preaches and practices consensus, tolerance and respect for freedom of thought. Last August we visited Armenia and Turkey. Both foreign ministers highlighted cooperation, prudence and respect with which we had conducted ourselves. It is what we offer, it is what Uruguay offers, but for that very reason it is what we expect and demand from any foreign interlocutor or visitor in this land where we cultivate peace and tolerance”, pointed.

“Today we remember with respect and recollection the martyrs of the Armenian genocide and we do it in the name of our deepest values that show the firmest conviction that atrocities like this should never be allowed or occur again,” Bustillo continued.
