Mexico describes the arrest of 125 Cuban migrants in less than 24 hours as historic

This Saturday the Mexican authorities detained 125 Cubans in two interceptions, according to the National Institute of Migration (INM), which depends on the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), considered the result as a “historical fact in at least the last three years” .

In less than 24 hours Migration reported this Saturday the arrest of 504 migrants, where in addition to the Cubans, they arrested 120 from Honduras, 98 from El Salvador, 78 from Nicaragua, 64 from Guatemala, 17 from Ecuador and one from Venezuela and Peru, respectively.

The authorities reported what they presumed was “the most accurate blow to migrant smuggling this year.” On the highway that connects the state of Puebla with the city of Orizaba, in the state of Veracruz, they stopped a caravan made up of 11 trucks and two private cars.

“In them, 330 migrants with irregular stay who were taken to the border with the United States were transferred,” he points out. 14ymedio a migratory agent based in Veracruz identified as Jacinto. The INM was warned of a caravan, but “the passage of several trucks in a row aroused suspicion,” says the officer.

In it official bulletin It is indicated that the location of these vehicles “derived from intelligence work” in which Migration and the National Guard and the state police intervened. However, Jacinto reveals that what they were looking for in the first instance was a cargo unit, “this van transport tells us that small units are being used more to avoid checkpoints, where one focuses more on cargo vehicles “.

Two other interceptions occurred in the state of Coahuila, bordering the US, where its governor initiated the so-called Migrant Containment Plan last week.

Along with the migrants, he detained 19 coyotes, who were placed at the disposal of the Attorney General’s Office for the crimes of migrant smuggling. “The detainees can provide information about the trafficking network for the work, it is evident that they are a link,” says Jacinto.

Two other interceptions occurred in the state of Coahuila, bordering the US, where its governor initiated the so-called Migrant Containment Plan last week. He added to armed elements of the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC) to carry out tours along the banks of the Rio Grande and lead raids on hostels and motels near the riverbed, with the aim of detaining undocumented immigrants.

Migration and the Coahuila police discovered 92 migrants, including 17 Cubans, during a routine check on the federal highway that connects the cities of Saltillo with Torreón, at the point located at the height of the Saltillo Criminal Justice Center.

“In accordance with and safeguarding their rights, the adults were taken to the INM offices to begin the migration process that defines their legal status in Mexico, while the minors remained under the guardianship of the System for the Integral Development of the Family. (DIF)”, asserted migration it’s a statement.

In addition, the government agency reported the arrest of the driver and the seizure of the vehicle, which were made available to the state police and the Public Ministry of the Federation.

The operation occurs while pressure from Texas towards Coahuila grows. Republican Greg Abbott hampered trade with Mexico two weeks ago by imposing additional truck inspections at the border, a measure he revoked in exchange for Coahuila, Nuevo León, Chihuahua and Tamaulipas reinforcing immigration checkpoints.

Meanwhile, the municipal police of the Coahuilense municipality of Arteaga notified Immigration of a second interception on highway 57. In it, he said, 82 people with irregular stay were detained. It was specified that they were transported in a cattle trailer: 16 Hondurans, 25 Guatemalans, 22 Nicaraguans, 17 Salvadorans and two Ecuadorians. The driver from San Luis Potosí was also arrested.

The region is experiencing a record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office detected more than 1.7 million undocumented immigrants on the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021, which ended on September 30.

This Saturday, the INM announced that a caravan of migrants who intended to leave en masse from Tapachula, on the border with Guatemala, to go to Mexico City had been dissolved.

The federal authorities began to serve the migrants in groups of 150 people with the promise of transferring them to shelters within four days to begin their migration regularization process and obtain humanitarian visas.

Nearly 800 migrants gathered in the Tapachula Bicentennial Park to make themselves available to the federal authorities in exchange for visas for humanitarian reasons.

They are mostly migrants from Venezuela, Honduras, El Salvador, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras and Haiti, but there are also people from Egypt, Mali, Congo and Senegal.
