The Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero, began an official visit to India this Sunday in New Delhi focused on trade and the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Cafiero met this morning with the Indian Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, with whom he had a “fruitful meeting,” according to the Indian Foreign Minister in a message in Spanish on his Twitter account, accompanied by images of the meeting.

“We discussed the expansion of our bilateral trade and cooperation in the sectors of agriculture, pharmaceuticals, electronics, electric mobility, defense and atomic energy,” said Jaishankar on this first Cafiero visit to India.

In addition, the Indian foreign minister noted, they will work “closely in the G20 and multilateral forums”, at a time of special global instability due to the war in Ukraine or the still profound effects of the impact of years of the pandemic.

The Argentine Foreign Ministry had also announced in a statement that during the meeting the ministers would begin talks to launch a cooperation forum between India and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC, currently chaired by Argentina) to “strengthen the extra dialogue regional» of the Latin American mechanism.

Cafiero also plans to lead today the launch of the Commission for Dialogue on the Malvinas Question, an archipelago under British domination and whose sovereignty Argentina claims. This act comes just two days after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s official visit to India concluded.

In addition, on Monday the Argentine minister will attend the inauguration of the seventh edition of the Raisina Dialogue, India’s main conference on geopolitics and geoeconomics, and on Tuesday he will participate in one of the conversation panels.

On Wednesday, Cafiero will travel to the Indian economic capital, Bombay, where he will visit the radioisotope production plant being built with the participation of the Argentine state-owned company Invap and will meet with representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industries, before concluding his ride.

The Argentine foreign minister arrived in New Delhi from Italy, where he held meetings at the headquarters of United Nations institutions such as the World Food Fund (IFAD) or the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), as well as a meeting with his Italian counterpart, Luigi di Maio. EFE
