This 15N in Cuba, parents are reluctant to send their children to school

This 15N in Cuba, parents are reluctant to send their children to school

After a pause of almost 20 months due to the pandemic, more than 700,000 primary school students in Cuba were summoned to resume face-to-face classes this Monday, the day the country also completely opened its borders to international tourism and the Civic March for the Change, despite the government’s repression.

For this reason, many parents decided not to send their children to school. From Consolación del Sur, in Pinar del Río, Yahima Díaz tells 14ymedio that there were not many children at her son’s school. “Of the total enrollment it was half, here they did an activity for the morning and there were the factors of the community. Parents were not allowed in at any school, and in secondary schools there were even fewer children, “he said.

“Here many parents did not send their children, several told me that they were not going to send them and the explanation was thus, literal: They are capable of anything, what if they send them to the street?”, They feared.

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, attended a primary education center in Havana, which again welcomed his students as part of the resumption of the 2020-2021 school year.

“Of the total enrollment it was half, here they did an activity for the morning and there were the ‘factors’ of the community”

Several students recited poems, sang to welcome their fellow students, and declared that they were happy to be back in the classroom after staying home from TV classes since April 2020.

A week ago, 612,000 students from other educations (from high school to university) already returned to their schools in person after the pause imposed by the restrictions of the pandemic.

They joined the more than 84,585 students of the twelfth grade, third and fourth years of Pedagogical Training and the third year of Technical and Professional Education who returned to the classroom on October 4.

The authorities explained that the face-to-face return must be done with “strict” compliance with hygienic-sanitary measures to avoid contagion.

It occurs in an improvement in the epidemiological situation and the reactivation of the economic life of the country, which includes the reopening of airports on Monday and the entry of international tourism.

During the day, the march called by the archipelago opposition platform against violence, the release of political prisoners and the solution to the problems through democratic and peaceful means is also expected.
