Two of the nearly fifty former Chavín de Huántar commandos who they refused to greet to President Pedro Castillo, gave their statements after leaving the event that entertained them for the 25 years of operation that brought down the MRTA terrorist group in 1997.
Former commando Jaime Cabrera spoke before the press and defined Pedro Castillo as a “puppet of Cerrón”, in addition to requesting the president’s resignation for not representing Peruvians. He also indicated that the president “is not qualified and has extremist ideas. What is happening in Cuajone, Las Bambas, is not a coincidence, everything is perfectly orchestrated”, declared the military officer for La República.

“Our nation state is being violated by extremists. Mr. Castillo is a puppet of Mr. Cerrón”said Cabrera, who was one of the five former Chavín de Huantar commandos who not only omitted the greeting to President Castillo, but also withdrew from the event.
“We withdraw from the ceremony to express our outrage towards these usurpers. We remember the memory of civilian and military men and women (…). They are trampling on their memory.” the former commando said.
The soldier stressed that it is not possible that compatriots continue to be seen begging in a rich country on the streets of all Peru and recalled that Castillo was a man who said he was going to defend the citizens, and that he is not doing it.

Along the same lines, a second former commando, Juan Carlos Rodríguez, also spoke out indicating that “The dignity of a soldier is respected, but the president has come to make fun of us, he has come to make fun of our dead.”
Regarding the act of protest during the ceremony, Rodríguez mentioned that his actions have been peaceful and that “honor is answered with honor.” Finally, he assured: “As soldiers, We have given our lives for Peru and we will do it again if necessary”.
