A group of relatives and those affected by the poisoning with the diethylene glycol syrup, demonstrated from noon this Wednesday, on the premises of the Presidency of the Republic and were attended by the health authorities, but there was no progress on the issue of the certifications.
Gabriel Pascual, president of the Diethylene Glycol Victims Committee, said that they addressed issues related to the care they receive from the Social Security Fund and the timely delivery of the medications required by these victims. He said that the issue of certifications could not be deepened due to the absence of the Minister of Health Ivette Berrios.
He assured that there will be a next meeting in the month of May and requested that the ministers of Health, housing, presidency and Economy and finance be in that approach to be able to address the issue of increasing the life pension they receive.
He added that at this time there are 112 files considered to be certified, however, the Committee’s lists show that there are more than a thousand people waiting for their certifications.
Dilza Bethancourt, affected by the syrup, called on President Laurentino Cortizo to approve the certifications because they have been left with consequences after ingesting this toxic drug. “If he says that it is not made of condensed milk, let him have the word of a man and comply; why is he going to close the case if those of us who are left are still suffering the horrible aftermath, we are devastated, ”he said
For his part, Benedicto Peñalba, who traveled from the province of Veraguas, assured that the authorities continue to delay the matter because (they) have not taken a little of that deadly syrup.
Those affected by this poisoning assured that if they do not have an answer in May and are certified, they will continue their fight in the streets.
