Cuba: serious traffic accident leaves 48 injured in Pinar del Río

First Lieutenant Yoel Pozo Acosta, traffic chief in Pinar del Río, communicated by telephone to Cuban News Agency (ACN) that a passenger truck from the private sector in the province of Artemisa, which covered the Pinar del Río-Habana route, left the road on a straight stretch in good condition and, for this reason, overturned. Details of the incident were still being investigated.

Carlos Adrián Díaz, a resident on the highway to Viñales, told the source that near the Entronque de Herradura the truck took the edge of the road, as it had done several times, and tried to straighten out in the center of the highway but overturned.

Meanwhile, Dr. Orestes Moya Álvarez, director of the Abel Santamaría Cuadrado hospital, stated that once the news was received, they activated the mass reception plan and the institution’s emergency system to care for the wounded.

The report specifies that three minors were sent to the Pepe Portilla pediatric hospital, without danger to their lives, and adds that so far five adults are reported in serious condition due to the traumas suffered.

The event constitutes the third accident with serious consequences in Pinewood of the river so far this year, and that the western territory shows an increase in accidents, according to ACN.

Two dead and several injured in a traffic accident in Pinar del Río

According to the most up-to-date figures from the National Road Safety Commission (CNSV), during the past year the trend of the last decade was maintained in terms of the decrease in traffic accidents on the Island, despite the fact that 70% of the provinces reported an increase in these events.

In 2021, 8,369 events of this type were accumulated in the country, which caused 589 deaths and 5,859 injuries, according to data from the CNSV managed by the official newspaper Granma. As for the causes, the main ones were linked to undue attention to vehicle control, disrespect for the right of way, violation of speed limits, the existence of technical malfunctions and driving under the influence of alcohol, refers the aforementioned means, medium.

These reasons generated 76.8% of the accidents registered last year, as well as 80% of the deceased and 78.1% of the injured. According to CNSV statistics, during that period, in 94.2% of accidents the human factor was decisive and in only 5.8% the cause was due to technical problems.
