Ecarrí challenges Chavismo with a referendum to change symbols of Caracas

The Pencil Alliance, under the leadership of Ecarrí, will go to the TSJ to file an appeal against the “outrage” of the Municipal Council of Caracas and before the CNE to request a referendum that allows the people of Caracas to decide which symbols they prefer.


Opposition leader Antonio Ecarrí addressed a challenge to Chavismo by demanding a referendum for the population of Caracas to vote whether or not they want the change in the symbols of the city.

The request comes after the Municipal Council of Caracas, administered by Chavismo, unilaterally applied changes to the symbols of Caracas, presenting new versions of the coat of arms, the flag and the anthem of the city that were already approved by the mayor of the city. Libertador municipality without consulting broad sectors of Caracas society.

Faced with this arbitrariness, the opposition faction of councilors from the Libertador municipality belonging to the Pencil Alliance denounced that the identity of the people of Caracas is being “violated” through these changes. Ecarrí joined this opinion and argued that its application does not respect the law.

“We have been victims of an attack on our identity. It is not only a constitutional violation, it is not only a violation of the Internal Regulations and Debates of the Municipal Council, it is not only a violation of the Law of Historical Patrimony of the Nation… it is a violation of what we Venezuelans mean,” he said. in a Press conference.

In this sense, Ecarrí announced that the purple awning will go to all available instances, such as the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) and the National Electoral Council (CNE), in an attempt to find actions that allow the changes to be reversed.

Before the TSJ he will denounce the “outrage” by filing an appeal against the decision of the Municipal Council, while the CNE will request the holding of a referendum so that the people of Caracas are the ones who decide which symbols they prefer.

The former candidate for mayor of the Libertador municipality applauded councilors Mayerling Occhino and Daniela Rodríguez for voting against these changes in the Caracas Municipal Council.
