End to the sale of animals in the Sonora Market? 9 months are foreseen for progress

Former local deputy Leticia Varela released images of the work in the place.

Parra recognized that the sale of animals in the place is not illegal and considered that what is required is to avoid abuse or unsanitary conditions. For this, formal talks began, in which the Ministry of Economic Development (Sedeco) will also participate, to offer alternatives and even credits for changes in its business line.

“They (the representatives of Sedeco) said that we can also bring credits so that we can leave the animals, so that they can have another more permitted, more innovative turn, and above all that does not imply a risk for the animals or in conditions that we do not like to see anyone, “said the mayor.

Parra assured that in these meetings the tenants are open to listen to the proposals of the authorities and alternatives for the change of business. Another actor that participates in these dialogues is the Ministry of the Environment (Sedema).

“This is not going to be soon, we are calculating a term of six months, eight months, nine months, depending on the support that may come; (by then) we must already have an important advance,” he said.

“How much more time should we give?”

Adriana Buenrostro, coordinator of the social organization Animal Heroes, considered that the announcement of reconverting commercial lines to avoid the sale of animals in the Sonora Market should be observed from an ethical point of view, since it is not enough to hide behind the certificates that allow this practice, but must enforce the laws on animal protection and prosecute complaints.

“How much more time must we give so that the animals stop suffering? Animal abuse is considered a crime in Mexico City; then, there is no reason to ignore this greater good,” said Buenrostro.

The activist criticized that the complaints filed by Animal Heroes and other organizations have not been addressed by authorities such as the Animal Surveillance Brigade, the Environmental Attorney’s Office and the Venustiano Carranza mayor’s office, to the extent that, after the November 4 fire, the tenants they continued to sell animals on public roads.

For the PAN deputy Ana Villagrán, a member of the Animal Welfare Commission in the City Congress, the period of up to nine months given by the mayor in Venustiano Carranza for the reconversion of business lines is very wide, when an action is necessary immediate.
