Six people who were shipwrecked as a result of a storm were rescued in Brazil thanks to a help note that they sent inside a bottle. The story, which seems to come out of a story, occurred in a river in the state of Pará, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon.
It all started on March 24, when six crew members of a medium-sized vessel undertook a trip that would take about ten days, between the city of Santarem and the municipality of Chaves, near the mouth of the Amazon River.
Everything was going according to plan until, at one point during the journey, they were surprised by bad weather and a strong storm, which caused a fire and forced them to seek refuge on dry land.
According to Marcos, one of the survivors, they managed to take the “Bom Jesus” to the beach of an island known as La Flecha, about 150 kilometers from Belén, the capital of Pará. For almost three weeks, they had to manage with the food they brought and with rainwater.
After 13 days there, the castaways wrote a note, put it in a plastic bottle, tied it to a life preserver and threw it into the water. Days later, a fisherman found her and alerted the Brazilian Navy, which launched an operation and managed to rescue them.
“Help! Help! We need help. Our boat caught fire. We have been on the island of Flecxas for 13 days, without food. Notify our family,” said the note written by the castaways, which also included the phone numbers of their relatives, according to the photo released by the Navy.
All of them were rescued by the Navy by helicopter and, although they were apparently in good health, they were transferred to a medical center.
The word of a survivor
Through a statement, Jeferson Marcos, one of the surviving crew members, gave details of the journey that could have ended in tragedy: “I am unemployed. I left Santarém to make this trip. On the way we got caught in a storm and the boat caught fire in the galley.”
“With the strength of God and the Brazilian Navy we managed to get out after we wrote a note and dropped it on a buoy. And it was found! Amen,” she added.
As he explained, he had learned this tactic in a Navy course, where he was taught that “in cases like these, you should write a note, put it in a bottle and tie it to a buoy before throwing it into the sea.”
