According to the Police Commander and the Governor of Guayas, the number of inmates injured in the clashes last night in the jail are 12.
The General Commander of the Police, Tanya Varela, and the Governor of Guayas, Pablo Arosemena, reported that due to the clashes between inmates of the ‘Litoral Penitentiary‘, which occurred between yesterday night and the early morning of today, so far there are 58 dead and 12 injured.
In addition, agents were able to seize a rifle, 2 short weapons and 10 sticks of dynamite. Varela said that at the moment there are around 400 policemen guarding the security of pavilion 2, which was attacked by inmates of pavilion 3.
According to Varela, these clashes are due to the absence of the leaders of several pavilions that have been released. “This void generates a power dispute to reach the pavilions as well as a dispute over the territory of criminal gangs,” he highlighted at the press conference.
The Governor of Guayas, for his part, said that in this confrontation there was “savagery” and that the lighting system was destroyed to generate greater anxiety.
“We are fighting against drug trafficking and criminal gangs that dispute the territory to distribute drugs,” said Arosemena.
These events began at 7:00 p.m. However, due to the use of weapons and explosives that the inmates had, the Police would not have entered at first. “We use strategies to act from the outside through drones to try to disperse the inmates,” said Varela, who explained that at 02:20, without the confrontations between inmates having ended, it was decided to enter police personnel into pavilion 2 to give shelter and security.
It was also reported that pavilion 2 of the Guayas Center for the Deprivation of Liberty N.- 1, better known as’Litoral Penitentiary‘, was attacked after one of its leaders, Alex Salazar (leader of’ Los Tiguerones’), was released on Wednesday, November 10.
President Guillermo Lasso announced through his twitter account that at 1:00 p.m. this Saturday a Security Committee will meet at ECU 911 in Samborondón for these events. “We will make an important announcement,” he assured. (MFU)
