Two independent productions from Cuba arrive at the Buenos Aires film festival

Two independent Cuban productions will be screened next week at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI) that will take place from May 19 to 1, in what constitutes its 23rd edition.

Blue Heart (2021)from Miguel CoyulaY Tundra (2021)by José Luis Aparicio, will be the materials incorporated into the program that announces, among its more than 60 debate spaces, the table “Cuba and the challenges of independent cinema”.

Blue Heart (104 m) is the most recent work by the filmmaker and writer Miguel Coyula, born in Havana in 1977. According to the synopsis, it is about “an alternative reality, in which Fidel Castro uses genetic engineering to build a new man and thus save utopia. The experiment fails, individuals are rejected by their own creators and organize a series of terrorist actions.

In addition to directing, Coyula has taken care of photography and editing in her own story. The film features performances by Lynn Cruz (also producer), Carlos Gronlier, Héctor Noás, Mariana Alom, Fernando Pérez, as well as music by Dika Chartoff, Porno Para Ricardo, Ivan Lejardi and Sinfonity.

Blue Heart will have screenings on Wednesday, April 20, Friday, April 22, and Sunday, April 24. Meanwhile, Tundraby also independent critic and curator José Luis Aparicio (1994), will have performances on Friday 22nd, Sunday 24th April and Wednesday 27th.

Aparicio’s film is based on a script by fellow filmmaker Carlos Melián in which “Walfrido Larduet, a lonely electrical inspector, dreams of the Red Woman, whose image persists and becomes an obsession. “Throughout a day, Walfrido will follow his trail as he travels through the suburbs of an infested city,” he refers to his summary.

The 30-minute film features performances by Mario Guerra, Neisy Alpízar, Laura Molina, Jorge Molina and Jorge Enrique Caballero.

In its catalog, the BAFICI organizers report that it will have more than 15 venues distributed in different neighborhoods of the city, with almost 500 face-to-face functions, while offering 223 of the 290 scheduled films online.

BAFICI is one of the most important film festivals in Latin America that brings together films by national and international filmmakers, noted for their innovative character. This time it brings together works from more than 40 countries.
