The horror of war is worse every day

Santa Cruz, unsafe city

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine exceeds all conceivable limits. Added to the ferocious attack by air, sea and land are the war crimes being carried out by Russian soldiers, who join the increasingly daring threats of President Vladimir Putin.

Staying in Ukraine is truly hell, because the Russian troops have not been able to respect any convention. They have bombed hospitals, shelters for children and the elderly, humanitarian corridors and civilian areas. Citizens were shot at only to be found trying to escape the war, and urban areas were left desolate, turned to rubble. Added to the above are the rapes of women, many of them girls and adolescents who were later murdered.

The facts are known on a global scale almost in real time. Opposition to the war is repressed in Russia, while few countries on the planet support such insane behavior.

Meanwhile, the Russian president does not take a step back, despite the fact that his troops failed to advance and were met by a brave Ukrainian resistance, commanded by its president Volodimir Zelensky, with the help of the countries that are members of NATO. However, despite global economic sanctions, the siege of Russian millionaires and the majority’s censorship of the war, Putin remains firm and determined to move forward.

Faced with the announcement of the shipment of US weapons to the Ukrainian troops, Putin warned that such an action would trigger “unpredictable consequences for regional and international security.” The president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced that the war equipment that will arrive in Zelensky’s country has a value of 800 million dollars and is a strong reinforcement for the defense of this battered country.

The big question is how far does Vladimir Putin intend to go? The horror is reaching extremes and it is clear that war crimes are being committed. The International Criminal Court defines them as murder, ill-treatment, deportation of the civilian population of the occupied territories, taking and execution of hostages, wanton destruction of cities or unjustified devastation. That court also speaks of crimes against humanity: serious violations committed as part of a large-scale attack against a civilian population, murder, rape, imprisonment, forced disappearances, sexual slavery, among others.

Putin’s new warning raises fears that the nightmare living in Ukraine can move to other countries that Russia could attack, even though its economy is increasingly weakened.

Added to the horror that this bloody war is causing are the effects for the entire planet. More than a million people are displaced from Ukrainethere is an unpredictable economic impact that reaches all corners of the world.
Faced with all this, it is urgent that solutions be sought to prevent the Ukrainians’ agony from continuing and that Vladimir Putin be punished for having committed crimes that humanity believed had already been overcome.
