According to different analysts, there are multiple factors that affect the increase in prices of basic necessities, among them: greater commercial activity in the world after the coronavirus pandemic, the military confrontation between Russia and Ukraine and the increase in inflation in Uruguay.
In this regard, the Vice President of the Republic, Beatriz Argimón, said in the last few hours that the Executive Power “follows up the price increase”, and announced that next week she will meet with President Luis Lacalle Pou to analyze the situation. .
The government has promoted the reduction of VAT for one month only for strip roasts, and for pasta and baked goods.
But for both the Broad Front and the Cabildo Open, the government’s initiative is insufficient. Both sectors proposed to extend the VAT exemption to twenty products in the food basket. In addition, the FA proposes that the tax be removed for six months.
For its part, the Center for Retail Storekeepers, Baristas, Self-Servicists and Allied Workers of Uruguay (CAMBADU) agreed with the Municipality of Canelones the fractional sale of non-perishable food in small businesses and for a period of 180 days. Such an agreement could also be extended to Montevideo.
All proposals are welcome
“It seems to me that the proposals from social and political sectors to contain inflation are welcome,” Argimón said this Friday, April 15, in statements to the press.
He recalled that Parliament has already been talking and proposals have been put forward. “We are interested in monitoring the different initiatives, because there may be coincidences with many of them.”
The issue will be analyzed by the parliamentary caucus of the National Party and by government authorities.
