Nuevo León receives the first rains in the midst of the drought emergency

The declaration of emergency due to drought

On February 3, the government of Nuevo León issued an emergency declaration due to the shortage of water in the Cerro Prieto and La Boca dams.

“Based on the results of the analyzes and opinions carried out by the National Commission for Water and Water and Drainage Services of Monterrey, IPD, this Declaration of Emergency is issued due to the occurrence of drought,” the document reads.

This measure, which is still in force, implied the suspension of all activities that by their nature merit excessive use of water, in addition, it was instructed to carry out all preventive actions that avoid the operation of hydraulic infrastructure to help mitigate the effects from lack of water.

The declaration also highlights that, given the scenario facing the state, it is urgent that the public, social and private sectors carry out joint actions to mitigate the effects of the lack of drinking water.

Why is there drought?

For several weeks, there were no rains in Nuevo León, which prevented the dams from having the minimum volume required to withstand the spring and summer months, according to the state government.

But, in addition, Governor Samuel García blames the past administration, led by Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, for this problem, for neglecting the water and sewage system, as well as for suspending awareness messages on water care and other key projects.
