Havana Book Fair will show the plurality and diversity of Mexico

The extensive program International Book Fair (FIL) of Havana, dedicated to Mexicoshows the “plurality and diversity” that characterizes that country, the Mexican ambassador to Cuba, Miguel Díaz Reynoso, assured on Wednesday.

The diplomat told reporters at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture that the delegation includes the presence of Mexican writer Paco Ignacio Taibo II, bolero singer Eugenia León and presentations by the National Folkloric Ballet, according to a dispatch from the agency EFE.

“It’s not just another fair, it’s the fair we expected,” said Díaz Reynoso, who also announced the opening of a bookstore by the Mexican Economic Culture Fund, the newspaper said.

The visual arts will have a leading role with the photographic exhibition The thorn and the fruitby Cecilia Salcedo, who portrayed the ancient relationship between men and plants in the Oaxaca region, according to a report from the agency Latin Press (PL).

The information adds that the Cuba-Mexico Friendship exhibition, hosted by the Palacio del Segundo Cabo, will reflect in 80 photos the historical friendship between both countries, whose roots of brotherhood and cooperation transcend the 120 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Cuba will celebrate the thirtieth edition of FIL, the most important literary event in the country, from April 20 to 30, after its suspension in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the current year, the event was already delayed for this same reason.

This time, the fair will pay tribute to the Cuban intellectuals Alberto Prieto and Luis Álvarez, national winners of Social and Humanistic Sciences, and Literature, respectively. The usual headquarters of San Carlos de La Cabaña will this time share the limelight with the historic center of Havana, which will host a series of activities and will have the organizational support of the Office of the City Historian.

The program includes talks on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of the national poet Nicholas Guillen and the centenaries of the also deceased poets Carilda Oliver Labra and Jesús Orta Ruiz, and the 140 years of the famous Cuban costumbrista novel, Cecilia Valdesby Cirilo Villaverde.

Another of the activities to be held within the framework of the nearby book festival in the Cuban capital will be the XI Meeting of Young Writers of Ibero-America, an event that will take place between April 25 and 30, and will include for the first time the presentation of oral storytellers.

The organizers also announced that, in addition to the Mexican musicians invited to the event, the Havana Amphitheater will host performances by various local artists during the fair, including Brenda Navarrete, Tony Ávila, William Vivanco and Luis Franco, as you refer the habanera radio station COCONUT.
