Madrid Spain.- The Russian government threatened this Thursday with a nuclear deployment in the Baltic if Finland and Sweden join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the newspaper reported. The country.
“It will be necessary to reinforce the group of ground forces, the anti-aircraft defense, deploy important naval forces in the waters of the Gulf of Finland. And in that case it will no longer be possible to speak of a Baltic without nuclear weapons. The balance must be restored,” said Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, on his Telegram account.
After stating that for Moscow “it is not so important how many countries there are in NATO, 30 or 32”, because “two more, two less, due to their weight and population, do not make much difference”, he pointed out that if Sweden and Finland enter NATO will double the length of the land border between Russia and the Atlantic Alliance, so it will need to be strengthened.
According to Medvedev, who was president of Russia between 2008 and 2012, the invasion from Russia to Ukraine is no reason for these countries to join NATO.
“No one sensible wants prices and taxes to rise; let tension rise along borders, let there be Iskander missiles, hypersonic weapons and nuclear-armed ships literally a stone’s throw from your house. (…) We are going to trust that the good sense of our northern neighbors prevails. And if not, as they say, they themselves have asked for it”, threatened the official.
This Wednesday the prime ministers of Sweden and Finland, Magdalena Andersson and Sanna Marin, confirmed the possible joint integration of their countries into NATO.
Last March the Russian government had threatened to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine: “We have an internal security doctrine, and it is public, you can read in it all the reasons for the use of nuclear weapons. (…) If there is an existential threat to our country, then it can be used in accordance with our doctrine,” said Dimitri Peskov, the main spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
