The government published today (13), in the Official Diary of the Union, a law that ensures humanitarian assistance for pregnant women in prison before and during childbirth, as well as health care for the newborn. The project had been approved in Congress in March, with its last approval being took place in the Senate.
The law, which has three articles, includes a paragraph in the Penal Execution Law, guaranteeing the imprisoned woman humane treatment of the pregnant woman. This treatment must occur during the medical-hospital preparatory acts for the delivery and during labor, as well as for the woman in the puerperium period, and it is up to the public authorities to promote comprehensive care for their health and that of the newborn.
The Penal Execution Law already requires medical follow-up to the prisoner and the baby, especially in prenatal and postpartum periods. The law published today enters into this regulation and adds the humanitarian character of this assistance.
