The Frente Amplio senator and referent of the MPP, Alejandro Sánchez, raised the need to “build a new public biotechnology company”. “Batllismo put the Uruguayan State on the technological frontier of petrochemicals. A new project from the Front has to put the State on the technological frontier of biotechnology,” he said in an interview with The Observer.
“Uruguay is an agro-exporting country and will continue to be. Today a seed is a technological device,” said the legislator. “The State has to worry so that the enormous number of Uruguayan producers have the best animal genetics possible, and we can be exporters of genetics and not just meat. That there is the best access to the productive transformations of the vegetable sector and we export more intelligence agriculture than agricultural products,” he suggested.
Asked whether that initiative would not correspond to the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA), Sánchez replied: “Of course it is INIA and it is Clemente Estable. But what we have to do is join one of those institutions, see how they coordinate to be much more powerful”, he developed.
“The Broad Front is not going to govern again to do more of the same,” said Sánchez. “That implies learning from everything we did, we are a generation that was formed in the opposition and that learned to be a government, and having been it gave us many lessons. Now we are back on the plain and we are rebuilding a different political force,” said the MPP leader.
“For me, Yamandú Orsi expresses the possibility of building a different leadership that implies not only dialogue and listening, but also the challenge of making decisions and putting innovative ideas into play thinking of a country of the future. Or is Uruguay going to continue arguing about whether public companies yes or public companies no? There are the blacksmiths who do not want them and have tried to sell them, and there are the rest who do want them. Is the discussion public companies yes or no, or is it which public companies we need ?” he pointed.
The idea of a new public company is a premise that the MPP senator hammered home years ago, projecting for 2024 a candidacy for the Presidency of the current Canarian mayor, a member of the same sector.
