During the first quarter of 2022 there was a 3% drop in consumption in supermarkets and self-service stores in Uruguayaccording to a survey by Radar Scanntech, a unit of the company, which is dedicated to the distribution of devices to make purchases and sales throughout the country.
The report also reflects a decline in sales volume of 6% compared to the same period of the previous year. Nevertheless, turnover showed a growth of 8% in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period.
The March numbers show that “intensified the decline in consumption” that had already been registered in February (4%), after a slight increase in January (1%), the report points out. In addition, the ticket average for the third month of the year was $329showing stability compared to last year.
By zones
According to data collected during the first quarter of this year, there was a “widespread drop in all departments”.
LThe most affected area was the center-northwhich includes the departments of Durazno, Flores and Tacuarembó, since it presented a drop in consumption of 5%.

In the first quarter of the year, a drop in consumption was observed in all areas of the country.
Likewise, the northern areas (Artigas and Rivera); east (Cerro Largo, Rocha and Treinta y Tres); south central (Florida, Lavalleja and San José) and south coast (Colonia, Soriano and Río Negro) presented a drop of 4%.
The least affected department was Maldonadowhere a decrease in consumption of 1% was recorded.
In the capital, meanwhile, there was a 3% drop. The municipalities located in the south (B, C, CH and E) showed a better performance in the first three months of the year compared to the rest of the department, according to the Radar Scanntech report.

All the municipalities show negative values in consumption so far this year; those with the greatest falls are A, D and G.

“All product families showed a drop in the accumulated of the year”, disclosed the analysis. Personal care recorded the largest decrease in consumption (-9%), followed by Beverages (-6%), Cleaning (-6%) and Food (-5%).
The products that grew the most in March were barbecue sauce, flavored noodles, sliced bread, fernet and nuggets, while those that registered the greatest drop were Easter eggs and figures, alcohol gel, disinfectant towels, energizers and liquid alcohol.

Personal Care and Cleaning are the ones that show the most negative values, with falls of 5.7% and 3.4% respectively.
Methodology
Scanntech’s analysis covers 1,500 points of sale throughout the country of the more than 6,000 it manages. The study focused on independent supermarkets and self-service stores, which represent almost 90% of the turnover of this channel.
The data comes from the Radar Scanntech report, prepared based on the numbers of the Integrated Billing System, from which real-time information is obtained on sales made in stores.
