A barge loaded with oil is at risk of sinking in the Delta

Until this Wednesday, April 13, the work of pumping the water that is sinking the barge with 18,000 barrels of oil continues, as well as the anxiety among the inhabitants and workers of Petrowarao

A barge with 18,000 barrels of oil is at high risk of sinking in Pedernales, Delta Amacuro state. According to reports from Petrowarao workers and some inhabitants of the area, this infrastructure began to lean to port a week ago, signifying imminent danger.

The incident was not dealt with until this Tuesday, April 12, after the dissemination of several images that confirmed the risk of the barge. This motivated the mobilization of motor pumps with which until now they try to remove as much water as possible, reported workers from Pdvsawho did not want to be identified for fear of being fired or legally prosecuted for spreading this problem.

It is a floating storage infrastructure that the Creole Marine company moved from the United States to Pedernales in 1997. It was already being used as a hydrocarbon container in that country.

As it is a barge with a single hull and of old date, explains a worker, constant maintenance should have been applied to it, as suggested by the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces during 2010, which was not taken into account.

The barge registered its first friction in the tank “II port” for the year 2012; therefore, it was decommissioned and decontaminated, but the stationary infrastructure continued to operate.

In 2019 there was another problem of this nature in the “V port” tank and the facts that glimpsed a clear deterioration of the company as such grew.

The crude that they never took away

With the application of the blockade against PDVSA operations by the United States government in 2019, all work was stopped on Cotorra Island, the specific sector of Pedernales where the oil field is located.

During this year a commission decided to move the crude oil due to the same risks that it represented having it in a barge with a history of friction, but it was not like that. According to the workers approached, Supply and Marketing did not manage this work.

In September 2021 Fadi Kabboul, president of Petrowarao, was in Pedernales. On this occasion, he was accompanied by a commission from the Venezuelan Petroleum Corporation (CVP), after the community generated several reports in which they asked that the oil be taken away because it was a latent danger.

“They came, they promised villas and castles, they ate fish and shrimp, but to date they have not taken that oil,” said one of the Pedernales residents.

Until this Wednesday, April 13, the work of pumping the water that is sinking the barge with 18,000 barrels of oil continues, as well as the anxiety among the inhabitants and workers of Petrowarao.
