MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban regime joined four bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc), the state agency reported today Latin Press (LP).
In this way, Cuba will become a member of the Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund, the Commissions on the legal and social status of Women and on Science and Technology for Development, as well as the Committee of non-governmental organizations.
The decision was announced this Wednesday during a session at the UN headquarters in New York, United States. The review of the official media indicates that “the election took place by acclamation, demonstrating the prestige of our country worldwide.”
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Cuban regime (MINREX), Havana’s admission to the bodies of the UN Economic and Social Council “proves Cuba’s influence within the United Nations and its work in favor of promoting and protection of human rights”.
In Twitterthe Cuban Presidency also echoed the island’s entry into the four multilateral mechanisms.
“Cuba is a world reference. Her prestige, despite the cruel media campaign against her, grows”.
It should be noted that the Cuban regime has also been elected to other important organs of the United Nations system, such as the Human Rights Councilmade up of 47 states.
In the case of the Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) of the United Nations Organization, it is a mechanism that assists the General Assembly to promote economic, social and international cooperation and development, as well as the human and financial resources of the entire United Nations system.
Composed of 54 member states, Ecosoc has among its objectives to examine economic and social problems, develop recommendations and propose policies to address these problems and convene international conferences to present projects, programs, among others.
