MIAMI; USA. — Cuba, Russia, China and Nicaragua have been some of the countries pointed out by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during the publication of the most recent report on human rights practices.

The document, prepared by Washington, highlights that one of the critical points that is reiterated in several of these nations is the increase in the number of political prisoners. In the case of Cuba, the report indicates that the trend became even more accentuated after the protests of the July 11, 2021.

“Governments are locking more critics at home. Today, more than a million political prisoners are held in more than 65 countries”, said the Secretary of State during the reading of the report.

The text indicates that on the island at least 600 people were “unjustly imprisoned for participating in peaceful protests last July,” a fact that has been denounced by different international organizations, but that has not prevented extensive sentences of between three and up to 30 years in prison for many of the protesters.

Blinken also referred to comments on the Russia case, where “countless Russian anti-corruption activists and opposition leaders, such as Alexei Navalny, are behind bars.

The Putin regime has also tightened bans on human rights and free expression, especially after the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

In the case of China, the report denounces that Beijing “continues to commit genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang against predominantly Muslim Uyghurs, among other minority groups, to undermine fundamental freedoms and autonomy in Hong Kong and carry out systematic repression. in Tibet.”
