Mexico: López Obrador wins revocation consultation

Mexico He opted this Sunday for the continuity of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as president of the country in the referendum on the revocation of the mandate. Just over 90% of voters were in favor of his management.

Participation, however, did not reach 20%; half of the 40% of the electoral census that was necessary for the exercise to be binding, according to the Spanish agency Eph.

Between 90.3% and 91.9% of the voters who went to the polls voted in favor of the president continuing in office for the remaining three years of his term.

Meanwhile, between 6.4% and 7.8% preferred the revocation, informed the president of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Lorenzo Córdova.

In a message to the nation broadcast on YouTube, the president defined the day as “historic” since it is the first time that a consultation is held to revoke the president or not.

“It is a democracy and it is the people who rule. I am very happy, because despite the regrets many people went out to vote”.

However, the participation was between 17% and 18.2% of the voters, a figure very far from the 40% necessary for the consultation to be binding. According to the newspaper La Jornada, the figures are around 16.8 million voters.

The low turnout constitutes a political setback for López Obrador and support for the opposition parties that rejected the consultation and proposed non-participation, says the Spanish agency.
