Niober García Fournier, Policía política

MIAMI, United States. — Freelance journalist and contributor to CubaNet Niober García Fournier denounced this Sunday a disinformation campaign launched by the political police against his family.

The reporter, based in Guantánamo, assured that throughout this week an agent from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) has transmitted false information to him and his parents about his brother’s situation. Yordis Garcia Fournierheld in the provincial prison, also known as Combinado, for demonstrating on July 11.

“On the 8th (April) I received a call from a MININT number. The person who called me told me that on the 9th my brother had a visit, that we should go there and they would give him a visit. I asked him if my brother was in a punishment cell, how were they going to give him a visit? This man, who said he was an educator for the Combinado, said yes, that they were going to give him a visit,” the journalist told this newspaper.

After receiving the information, García Fournier’s parents went to the Guantánamo provincial prison. However, the prison authorities assured that the political prisoner remained in the punishment cell.

“Our parents went in a car and told him that Yordis had no visitors. My brother’s re-educator, a captain of the Combinado, attended them and asked who had given us that information. The officer recalled that Yordis was in the cell on punishment, that the prohibition of calls would be in effect until May 17, and that the suspension of visits would remain until May 27. She insisted that no one from the Combine has called my family to tell them to go there.”

The journalist indicated that later they called his father’s phone. It was the same person and the same number.

“This time, the officer posed as the head of the prison and told my father to come next Wednesday.”

García Fournier pointed out that the false information offered by the MININT forced his parents to pay more than 600 Cuban pesos (CUP) just for travel.

“They are kidding my family,” the reporter denounced.

Yordis García Fournier was among the nine convicted for participating in the 11J protests in the city of Guantánamo. He was sentenced to three years and two months in prison for the crimes of public disorder and contempt.

The opponent has been in punishment cell number 35 since March 22, they confirmed to CubaNet sources within the Combined Guantanamo.
