Three young swordsmen will represent Cuba in the World Cup of Fencing Challenge Monal, which will be held in Paris from April 15 to 17. They are Ringo Quintero, Dariel Carrión and Lázaro Fernández.
It is a new team, where of its members “only Ringo has experience. Dariel has participated in two international events, but not at this level, and Lázaro is a rookie, ”explained his coach, Jaine Hernández, to the official sports newspaper. Hit.
Ringo Quintero, 32, has crossed swords in three world championships: Budapest 2013, Kazan 2014 (150) and Moscow 2015, and at the XVI Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011 he placed fifth. He also competed in the 2017 San Juan Central American Championship, in Puerto Rico, where he placed sixth.
For the Parisian event, 287 swordsmen from 55 nations have been confirmed, led by the first in the ranking of the International Federation, the Frenchman Romain Cannone, the Venezuelan Rubén Limardo, the Hungarian Gergely Siklosi, the Italian Andrea Santarelli and the Ukrainian Igor Reizlin.
Cuba will go with six fencers to the Junior Pan American Games
France attends the event with 20 athletes -the largest representation- and is followed by Belgium, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Switzerland, the United States and Ukraine, with 12 each.
The World Cup program opens on Friday, April 15, with the poules – groups that are organized at the beginning of the competition – and the individual preliminary round. The final will be played on the following date, and Sunday is reserved for team competition.
