Since the last presidential elections, due to the Statute of the Opposition, the second presidential candidate with the most votes can access a seat in the Senate, while the vice-presidential formula also accesses a position in the House of Representatives.
This is how Gustavo Petro acceded to his current seat in the Senate, after having obtained second place in the 2018 presidential elections, when Iván Duque was elected as President of the Republic.

This Saturday, in the midst of the political campaigns carried out by each of the presidential candidates, Petro threw a hint at Fico Gutiérrez related to this Opposition Statute.
Through his social networks, the leader of the Historical Pact sent a message to “Duque’s presidential candidate”, to whom he said he was going to leave his office in the Senate.
“I am saving my Senate office for Duque’s presidential candidate. (…) I warn you, it is a decent office”wrote the senator and presidential candidate.
