GGG knocks out Murata and unifies IBF and WBA titles

After a rocky start, the 40-year-old Kazakh rallied midway through the fight to prove to Murata, the 2012 Olympic runner-up in London, that he hasn’t lost his punch, sending his opponent to the canvas in the ninth round before The referee put an end to the fight.

His new challenge could be a third match against his great rival Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, 36 years old. ‘Canelo’ became in 2021 the first boxer in history to unify the four categories in super middleweight, and later went up to light heavyweight to challenge the WBA champion of the category, Dmitry Bivol, on May 7.

In case of a new victory for the Mexican, a third fight against Golovkin could take place as of September.

“Of course, when an opportunity presents itself, it will always be interesting,” Golovkin said of the prospect of a new duel with Álvarez.

“The Canelo fight (against Bivol) takes place in May and it will not be easy. So I propose that we wait and see what happens, he said.

The first Golovkin-Álvarez confrontation in September 2017 ended in a much-discussed draw, with many experts in favor of giving the Kazakh victory.

At the rematch in September 2018, Álvarez prevailed on points by unanimous decision.
