Political Police Threatens CubaNet Journalist Anay Remón with Prison

Anay Remón García, Policía política

MIAMI, United States. — Agents of the Cuban political police threatened this Thursday the journalist from CubaNet, Anay Remon Garciawho was interrogated in the afternoon at the Zanja station, in the municipality of Centro Habana.

The reporter told this newspaper that she was “interviewed” by two agents who, despite having shown little knowledge about her journalistic work, accused her of “spreading false news.”

“They have no idea who I am or what I write, but “they threatened me with the current criminal code and with the next one. I was accused of spreading fake news. They don’t even know that I’m an opinion columnist (…). They stayed a little off base and took hold of the fact that it is still counterrevolutionary work,” Remón García said in a conversation with CubaNet.

The journalist said she felt outraged by the constant references made by the officers to her mother and her partner. She also said that the agents spoke a lot, and with contempt, about the San Isidro Movement (MSI).

“They talked about Maikel (Osorbo) and Luisma (Luis Manuel Otero), that almost all the journalists have left,” added the reporter.

According to Remón García, the agents “were particularly interested in the informal press conference held at the US Embassy in Havana.”

“One of them tried to make me complex by saying that two days before that meeting, Timothy Zúñiga had met to give exactly the same information to the accredited press. What if the fact that he did not include the independent press in that meeting did not attract my attention, ”said the journalist.

Although the agents did not present any formal accusation against the young woman, they made it clear that, sooner or later, her work as an independent journalist could land her in prison.

An Art History graduate from the University of Havana and a former professor at the Faculty of Arts and Letters, Anay Remón García has been questioned on several occasions due to her work with CubaNet. A ban on leaving the country in force since 2018 also weighs on her.
