A former player of Atlético de Madrid, arrested with a gun

The Uruguayan soccer player Nicolás Schiappacasse, who was in preventive detention since he was arrested in January carrying a firearm, has been sentenced this Thursday to serve a six-month sentence of house arrest, to which other measures will be added later.

“He was considered the perpetrator criminally responsible for repeated crimes of internal trafficking of firearms and ammunition, one of them in formal competition with a crime of receiving and all of them in real repetition among themselves, with a crime of carrying firearms in places public,” Javier Benech, Director of Communications for the Public Prosecutor’s Office, told EFE.

After an abbreviated trial, the former Peñarol and Atlético de Madrid soccer player, among other teams, was sentenced to 14 months in prison, of which he served two months and 12 days in effective prison while the precautionary measure was served.

After this instance, Schiappacasse will serve the rest of the sentence under the probation regime, where he will be under total house arrest for six months, although authorized to attend training and play with the El Tanque Sisley club.

Then you will have to report once a week to a police station and carry out community tasks for four hours a week.

The facts

Schiappacasse was arrested on January 26 during a police check carried out on one of the main national routes in which a 9-millimeter firearm was seized from him.

That day the soccer player was traveling in a private vehicle to the department (province) of Maldonado, where he was going to attend a match between Peñarol and Nacional in which he could not participate due to injury.

As detailed in a press conference who was his lawyer at the time, the aforementioned weapon had been reported stolen two years ago and the footballer did not have a license to carry it.

Sentence

Two days after that event, despite the fact that the prosecutor had requested 120 days of preventive detention as a precautionary measure, the Uruguayan Justice ordered 90 days of preventive detention for the athlete for illegal possession of a firearm in addition to other charges.

Born in Montevideo in 1999, Schiappacasse began his career with the local River Plate, a team that transferred him to Atlético de Madrid.

In Europe, the forward played in the subsidiary of the mattress team, in Rayo Majadahonda, in the Portuguese Familacao and in the Italians Parma Calcio and Sassuolo.

With the Uruguayan national team, he won the 2017 South American U-20 Championship and played in two World Cups in that category, South Korea 2017 and Poland 2019.
