Paraguay aspires to deepen ties with Costa Rica after Chaves' victory

Paraguay congratulated this Wednesday the elected president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, for his victory in Sunday’s elections and expressed its intention to work to continue deepening the “fraternal ties” between the two peoples.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted the “exemplary development of the second round” electoral in the Central American country and considered that it “demonstrates the strength of Costa Rican institutions and their commitment to democracy.”

“The Government of the Republic of Paraguay reaffirms its willingness to work together to continue strengthening and deepening the fraternal ties that unite our peoples,” the statement said.

In addition, he saluted Stephan Brunner and Mary Munive for their election as vice presidents.

Chaves, from the young Democratic Social Progress Party (centre right), obtained 52.9% of the vote and defeated former president José María Figueres (1994-1998), who achieved 47.1%.

An economist by profession, Chaves, 60, will assume power on May 8 for a period of 4 years, replacing the current president of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado.
