MIAMI, United States.- The Cuban actor and director Jazz Vilá presents from this Friday until May 7, at the Paseo de las Artes in Miami, the work ‘Skyscraper’, a piece premiered in 2014 at the Sala Adolfo He mourned in Havana, which featured the late actress Broselianda Hernández.
The play, the first great success of Jazz Vilá Projects (JVP), the theater company founded and directed by Vilá himself, surpassed 80 full theater performances in Cuba and brought together nearly 15,000 spectators in two seasons and a tour national.
In interview with Journal of the Americas (DDA), Vilá assured that this “this adaptation in Miami is part of the reinvention that one should always have in life. And it is a challenge because this time we will use containers and part of the exterior space of the Paseo de las Artes to create a unique experience for the spectator”.
“On the other hand, we are celebrating eight years of the company, a number that is very significant because for me it represents the end of a cycle of a lot of learning and renewal. I have understood that one must always think about what the viewer wants to appreciate, and not so much about what one as a creator wants to expose”, he added.
Vilá explained to DDA that Rascacielos seeks to be a kind of mirror for the public, “where complex realities are exposed that encompass sexual orientation, age differences within the same couple, and the need to learn not to judge.”
“In Cuba this work became a benchmark for young people, and I hope that in Miami it will also generate interest and debate,” said the director.
The piece also talks about infidelity, fear, loneliness and violence through four simultaneous stories that make up the same narrative, since what used to take place in a common room for four couples will now take place in four containers on the walk representing a room, a kitchen, a living room and a balcony.
“This work represents a very extensive literary and scenographic adaptation in which the public will be able to enjoy a single scene, or all of them. Therefore, a very interactive experience is generated for the viewer”, said Vilá.
The Cuban and Venezuelan actors who accompany him “represent two of the nationalities that have the greatest presence in Miami. And that enriches the work. I am working with empirically trained actors and others who are professionals. In fact, seven of the actors in the cast will work with me for the first time, ”he sentenced.
