Relatives of political prisoners protested to demand Amnesty Law

Juan Pablo Guanipa asked those who seek to reactivate the negotiation to include the release of political prisoners

This Tuesday, April 5, relatives and friends of the political prisoners, together with several opposition politicians, protested in front of the UNDP headquarters in Caracas in order to demand that an Amnesty Law be enacted that benefits these people detained illegally. arbitrarily and unfairly.

One of the people who was present at the demonstration was Lili Barboza de Hernández, wife of General Héctor Hernández Da Costa, who denounced that the detainees are victims of various violations of their rights.

Katerin Molina Pérez, daughter of Luis Enrique Molina, a former official of the Metropolitan Police (PM), also participated. She took the opportunity to accuse the authorities of having violated all the freedom measures for her father and that they currently have him separated from his family.

Molina’s story is one among the 239 cases of political prisoners in the country, registered by Foro Penal, and discriminated against in the following way: 225 men and 14 women, of which 109 are civilians and 130 military, in the balance presented the vice president of that NGO, Gonzalo Himiob, also warning that there are more than 40 political prisoners with serious health conditions, while warning that the conditions of imprisonment of these people – and of the prison population in general – is very precarious and “inhumane.”

There was the leader of Primero Justicia and first vice president of the National Assembly elected in December 2015, Juan Pablo Guanipa, who assured that the political forces accompanied his relatives in their petition and recalled that when a member of a family is imprisoned, also the other members do.

“Today we come to the UNDP headquarters in Caracas to accompany the political prisoners and their families. When a person is imprisoned, his family is imprisoned, when he does not have access to justice, the processes are delayed, when he does not have access to food or health, all his rights are violated, “said Guanipa.

He stressed that one cannot resign or think that “everything is lost”, but rather intensify the struggle in favor of achieving changes in the country and the release of political prisoners. In addition, it is now required that their rights to a fair trial, health and food be enforced.

Juan Pablo Guanipa addressed those who are in the process of resuming the negotiation so that they include the issue of political prisoners on the agenda and respect their human dignity.

For his part, the coordinator of the Convergence party, Biagio Pilieri, insisted that the political prisoners “are not alone” and expressed that they will continue fighting until they can regain their freedom.

This protest by relatives of political prisoners takes place days after the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, announced setting up a permanent office of that organization in Venezuela and thus be able to continue investigating.

In November 2021on his first visit to Venezuela, prosecutor Khan informed the Maduro government about the beginning of the investigation phase for alleged crimes against humanity committed in the country, at least since 2017.
