Rains in Mérida caused landslides and floods after flooding of rivers and streams

The rains in Mérida this Tuesday, April 5, affected two bridges and the supply of drinking water in various sectors of the entity

In the early morning hours of this Monday, April 5, rainfall was recorded in the Mérida state that generated the increase in the La Fría riverbed, in the town of Chama, where several families were evicted preventively to avoid any eventuality.

The entity’s security forces went to the area to attend to the citizens who could be affected, said journalist Leonardo León.

The governor of the Mérida state, Jehyson Guzmán, indicated on his social networks that the La Astillera river, in the Chama basin, overflowed. Similarly, he said that so far only material damage had been recorded.

Already in the morning, the journalist Jade Delgado reported on his social networks that the rains affected two bridges due to the flooding not only of La Astillera, but also of the La Fría tributary, also damaging the supply of drinking water and leaving 27 families incommunicado. In addition, a vehicle was swept away by the force of the water, although there were no human victims.

He explained that sectors such as San Antonio, La Trinidad and La Astillera were the most affected by the rainfall.

The mayor of Mérida, Jesús Araque, warned that the drinking water supply was affected by about 60%, directly impacting the population of the Chama Basin and part of the Campo Elías municipality.

The Minister of the Interior and Justice, A/J Remigio Ceballosreported that officials from various rescue and security forces are in the area to protect the population of Mérida.

At the end of August 2021, there were rains in the Mérida state that left at least 21 people dead and numerous victims.

That year, the rainy season in Venezuela caused hundreds of affected families, floods, road collapses, landslides and more than twenty victims to mourn. (balance until September 2, closing date of this special). The rains caused havoc in at least 10 states of the country. All this in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic and fuel shortages. The most affected states then were Mérida, Anzoátegui and Bolívar.
