The sociologist and teacher Juan Valdés Paz died this Tuesday at the age of 83 in Havana, state media reported without specifying the cause of his death. The National Prize for Social and Humanistic Sciences for the work of life in 2014, is considered by the ruling party as one of the “most outstanding thinkers of contemporary Cuba.”
According publishes Granma, the contributions of the political scientist were reflected in several studies on “political, economic and social processes” in the Cuban scene and in which “he contributed concepts and criteria” that were “aimed at” the realization of socialism.
Among the texts by Valdés Paz, the official newspaper noted The socialist transition in Cuba (1993), Agrarian processes in Cuba, 1959-1995 (1997), Agrarian organization processes in Cuba 1959-2006 (2009) and among others, The evolution of power in the Cuban Revolution (2018). In addition, many of his articles were published in magazines and compilations in Cuba, Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, the United States and Spain.
He worked for several years as a researcher at the Center for the Study of America and the Institute of History of Cuba
Born in Havana in 1938, the historian and philosopher also graduated in Sociology and was a professor at the University of Havana and the Raúl Roa García Higher Institute of International Relations.
Valdés Paz was a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac) and before retiring he worked for several years as a researcher at the Center for the Study of America and the Institute of Cuban History.
“The author of books that are references for the knowledge of cardinal aspects of the Cuban Revolution, is no longer among us”, said the writer Rafael Acosta de Arriba, who also pondered “Juan’s high human quality and the void that he leaves to the Cuban social sciences.”
Upon learning of his death, the Uneac called to Valdés Paz a “dear revolutionary intellectual” and sent condolences to friends and family.
