Bolivia announces in the International Court of Justice the intention to dismantle the Silala canals

Within the framework of the legal process for Silala, the legal team representing Bolivia informed the judges of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) of the government’s intention to dismantle the canals that were built to facilitate the transfer of these waters to Chile.

“I have been authorized to state that Bolivia has the firm intention of proceeding with the revitalization of the bofedales (high-altitude wetlands) and that, although a final decision has not been made, the Government believes that the best way to do it will be proceeding with the dismantling of the facilities, although other more expensive possibilities can be considered”, French lawyer Alan Pellet said during oral hearings on Monday.

The jurist pointed out that the approach has to do with the position of Chile, which on Friday expressed that it was not opposed to the destruction of these civil works.
